Mountain biking, which originated in the United States, began in 1974 when Gary Fisher, Charlie Kelly, and Tom Ritchey wanted a bike to ride off the road, away from "police, cars, and buildings.
That same year, Gary Fisher and his friends' death-defying trip to mount tamalpais paved the way for a new style of cycling. Gary Fisher's Klunker was named one of the "top 10 Mountain bikes of all time" by Mountain Bike Action magazine, following his popularity in the mountains.
In 1976 Charlie Kelly started promoting the new downhill, the first great mountain biking event. Charlie Kelly commissioned Joe Breeze to design and develop the country bike, the first "mountain bikes" ever manufactured and named "Breeze."
Joe Breeze designed and built nine series of models based on the Breeze model between 1977 and 1978. The prototype is now in the smithsonian's national museum.
